MTV - The Music Video Network That Doesn't Offers Music Videos

When I was younger, it took a lot to keep me away from watching MTV music videos. I loved music, and I couldn't get enough of the cool videos and the larger than life musicians that populated them.

As time went on though, it became a lot more apparent that though the M in MTV stood for music, it wasn't actually their primary focus. After a while, I noticed less and less music, and a lot more game shows. I can't even watch the station today, though I'm aware that I'm now out of their target age group.

Today, MTV music isn't what it was in the past, if you can find it at all. Their program is full of reality shows and specials, and locating music videos is actually difficult to do.

Worse, the MTV music of today seems to be nothing but noise, though I guess that just makes me ancient right? Most of it wouldn't even be labeled as music, but I'm conscious that this really is just my opinion. I know that individuals who are younger than me appreciate it; it's just not for me.

I really haven't thought a lot about MTV music videos in a long time, but I've started to think about it again. My daughter is getting older and although I hate the thought of it, I know she's going to outgrow groups like the Wiggles soon enough, and she might be listening to music that's made for older children.

What scares me is that I cannot find any MTV music videos that I'd really want her watching. I guess you could call me over protective, but I think youngsters are growing up much too fast, and I want her to take pleasure in the freedom of childhood for as long as she can just before she is conscious of things like sex and trying to act and seem older.

The content of most of the MTV music videos makes my skin crawl. Girls have come a long way in the past few years, but you'd never ever know it by watching a number of these videos.

Self respect seems to have flown out the window, but to be fair, this has often been the case with most of the MTV music videos that have come and gone in the past. I suppose it just seems to be getting worse, and the depravity seems to have gotten worse.

I do not want her identifying with any rock music band or kids rock music. I know I cannot keep her from seeing it permanently, but I hope I can hold her off for long enough to show her how a real female should live.

And if one day she aspires to become a musician, I'll expose her to rock music lyrics online where I can keep an eye on what she sees and hears.
